Il Mercatino Giapponese in Rome: Should You Go? We'll Let You Know.

Il Mercatino Giapponese

Next Event: March 15, 2015 | Time: 10AM – 8PM

Blackout Club, Via Casilina 713, Rome (Zone: Tor Pignattarra)

If you take either the metro line A or B to Termini, then grab the 105 bus in the direction of Grotte Celoni or the tram line FC1, you will be able to arrive at the Mercatino Giapponese . (To plan your trip visit Rome’s transportation Pages: ATAC or MuoversiaRoma)

Estimated times from Termini: 30 minutes (Bus) & 20 minutes (Tram).

All told, it took me an hour to get there from Garbatella, making my bus ride around 40 minutes. So, I would recommend taking the tram.

The Mercatino Giapponese is a monthly flea market event held in Tor Pignattarra (Torpignattarra), a zone just outside of  the historic center. It’s perhaps best described as a neighbourhood yard sale meets anime/manga/cosplay convention.  Either way, it’s a fun environment. You get the sense that everyone there knows each other, but are quite excited to welcome and make new friends.

What you will find there are new and used items (there is a heavy focus on anime/manga), including toys, books, jewelry, clothing, shoes, etc.  Two of the most wonderful aspects of the market is that there are quite a few handmade items and the chance to try Japanese cuisine (including takoyaki, yakisoba, and dorayaki).

All in all, it’s a perfect event for families with children and teens, especially if they are into anime/manga culture.  They will definitely delight in the experience.

I only offer one word of caution: the neighbourhood is quite different than and is a distance from the historic center, I would suggest going early to this event as there can be a long wait for the bus or tram for your return.
